Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, D-Ga., has proposed a trial date for the prosecution of President Trump, along with 18 other defendants, regarding the Georgia election case.
Willis asked a judge to set the trial date for March 4, 2024, just one day before the elections on Super Tuesday, when the states with the largest amount of delegates up for grabs hold their primaries.
Fourteen primaries will be held across the country during Super Tuesday, including California, Texas, and North Carolina. With 865 delegates up for grabs on Super Tuesday, it is the most important day of the 2024 primary cycle that will make or break the campaigns of many candidates.
For context, 1,234 delegates are needed to secure the presidential nomination for the Republican Party. Over 70 percent of the delegates needed to win the nomination are up for grabs on Super Tuesday, and Democrats’ attempts to kneecap Trump’s campaign through legal maneuvers right before the biggest day of the primary cycle may be a difficult obstacle for the 45th president to overcome.
According to a court filing, Willis also requested that arraignments for the 19 total defendants happen during the week of Sept. 5. However, the dates are currently only a proposal and are not official until signed by a judge.
President Trump was indicted for a fourth time on Monday, this time because of his alleged attempts to “overturn” the 2020 election results in the state of Georgia.
Willis, a Democrat who is prosecuting Trump, also indicted 18 of his former officials, citing examples of their alleged help to the 45th president to contest the election, and comments made regarding the results, as evidence of wrongdoing.
Trump will also stand trial in March 2024 for a separate case regarding alleged hush money payments to Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election cycle.
The 45th president will then face a trial later in May, this time regarding special counsel Jack Smith’s case against Trump regarding his reported mishandling of classified documents.
Smith is also seeking another a trial for Jan. 2, 2024, pertaining to Trump’s alleged attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election through his reported calls to contest the results during the certification of electoral votes on Jan. 6, 2021.
