President Trump celebrated the recent resignation of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s (R) top strategist in his flagging 2024 presidential campaign bid, calling it “GAME OVER” for the governor’s executive aspirations.
On Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Jeff Roe is out—GAME OVER for DeSanctimonious!”
Jeff Roe was formerly the top advisor in DeSantis’s super PAC, Never Back Down. Last week, Roe announced on X that he would be resigning from his position in the Florida governor’s campaign, just a few weeks away from the critical Iowa caucuses.
The shocking resignation set tongues wagging on social media, especially amidst DeSantis’s plummeting poll numbers in the GOP primary.
“I can’t believe it ended this way,” Roe wrote on X. “I’m so proud to have worked alongside these men and women at NBD 24/7 the past nine months to save the country. Good luck the next 28 days and a wake up. I’m so sorry I can’t be there with you.”
Nationwide, President Donald Trump has maintained his dominance as the GOP favorite to win the 2024 Republican primary nomination next year, increasing his lead every month in 2023. According to the latest data from Morning Consult, Trump holds a 54-point lead over DeSantis in the GOP primary race.
In the Iowa caucuses, which will likely determine the future of DeSantis’s campaign, Trump also has a whopping 36-point lead over DeSantis, according to mainstream outlet CBS News.
It appears that Roe may have seen the writing on the wall for the DeSantis campaign and simply chose to jump ship before the caucuses kick off on January 15. Interestingly, Roe’s resignation also came after The Washington Post disseminated a story highlighting a slate of allegations internally at Never Back Down.
In his statement, Roe acknowledged the story and noted, “I cannot in good conscience stay affiliated with Never Back Down given the statements in the Washington Post today. They are not true and an unwanted distraction for Governor DeSantis.”
Regardless of the allegations made in the outlet’s story, the Associated Press reported that Never Back Down has suffered the resignation of a slate of upper-level campaign members, “including two chief executives, the group’s chairman and its communications director.”
