Rep. Buddy Carter, R-Ga., has nominated President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his role in brokering a ceasefire between Israel and Iran following a brief but intense conflict over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
In a letter to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee, Carter praised Trump’s “extraordinary and historic role” in ending what has been dubbed the “12 Day War” and preventing Iran, described as “the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism,” from acquiring nuclear weapons.
“President Trump’s influence was instrumental in forging a swift agreement that many believed to be impossible,” Carter wrote, adding that Trump’s actions exemplify “the pursuit of peace, the prevention of war, and the advancement of international harmony.”
The ceasefire, which Trump announced late Monday, came after more than a week of escalating violence. Israel launched preemptive strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities, prompting retaliatory rocket fire.
Over the weekend, the U.S. joined the conflict with its own airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites. Iran responded by firing rockets at a U.S. base in Qatar on Monday but reportedly gave advance notice, and no injuries were reported.
Carter’s nomination comes amid growing global scrutiny of the fragile ceasefire. On Tuesday, Israel accused Iran of violating the agreement, a claim Tehran has denied.
While this is not the first time Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, he has yet to receive the award. Earlier this year, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., also nominated Trump, pointing to what he called the president’s positive impact on global stability following his return to office in 2024.
“Not since Ronald Reagan has an American president better represented the national resolve of peace through strength or the fundamental case for a world without war,” Issa wrote in March.
“Remarkably, it was the 2024 election of Donald Trump – more than 10 weeks before his swearing in – that tangibly kickstarted the cause of peace in numerous regions of the world, and we are already seeing the benefits. I hope the Committee takes note of these extraordinary times and recognizes that President Trump ideally represents what the Nobel Peace Prize should stand for,” he added.
According to the Nobel Prize organization, 338 individuals and organizations have been nominated for the 2025 Peace Prize.
