Kansas Republican Sen. Roger Marshall has called for an expanded investigation into the assassination attempt of President Donald Trump, according to a new report.
The Washington Examiner revealed Marshall’s letter sent to the Department of Homeland Security in an exclusive Monday account.
“USSS protection procedures are not transparent to the American people, even following two recent Congressional hearings during which my colleagues and I posed probing questions to the USSS Director and Acting Director, only to receive unsatisfactory nonanswers,” Marshall, who sits on the Senate Homeland Security Committee, wrote.
The senator also expressed concerns over the lack of accountability during the investigation.
“Nearly two months after an assassination attempt that left President Trump within centimeters of his life, there are still no answers or accountability for the Secret Service’s failures that day,” Marshall said in a statement to the outlet.
“Instead, they have stonewalled our inquiries, and to our knowledge, no one has been fired for top-down mistakes made. This is unacceptable from an agency once respected as one of the nation’s top law enforcement bureaus — they’ve lost the public’s trust,” he added.
Secret Services Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned following pressure from lawmakers after the July assassination attempt. At least five Secret Service agents were placed on administrative leave.
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) recently drew attention after speaking out concerning whistleblower testimony that claimed some agents assigned to protect Trump received only a two-hour online training.
“Think about this: This former president of the US…is sent out on stage, most of the people there are not trained, they’re not qualified. They only got a webinar training and even that didn’t work,” Hawley told Watters during a Fox News interview last week.
Hawley’s also released a press statement revealing that as a member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, he has been actively investigating the attempted assassination of Trump. He has conducted a personal inspection of the Butler site and has brought several whistleblower claims to light.
Some claims include reports of inadequate security at the Trump rally, abandoned posts on the roof where the shooter was positioned and reduced security measures attributed to decisions made by Acting Director Rowe.
