Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced on Tuesday that he plans to set aside land in South Florida for President Donald Trump’s future presidential library, a proposal that will be presented to a state board next week.
The 2.63-acre parcel, currently used as a Miami-Dade College parking lot, would be dedicated to the project if approved by the Board of Trustees of the Internal Improvement Trust Fund. Trump changed his voter registration from New York to Florida in 2019, and his Mar-a-Lago resort remains one of his primary residences.
“President Trump has achieved results for the American people and made a lasting impact on our nation’s history,” DeSantis said in a statement. “No state has better delivered the President’s agenda than the Free State of Florida, and we would be honored to house his presidential library here in his home state.”
The Trump library foundation previously considered locations at Florida International University and Florida Atlantic University. While Florida Atlantic is closer to Mar-a-Lago, the Miami-Dade site sits about 12 miles from Trump’s National Doral golf course, according to Politico.
“The final decision was made by the Trumps,” a Trump adviser involved in the process said, according to NBC News. “Without question, being near the Freedom Tower was important, but also being on the waterfront.”
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, who participated in planning discussions, said he supports the proposed location.
“I can think of no better location to tell the story of Donald Trump — a story of strength, one of redemption, one of victory and one of sacrifice to the American people,” Uthmeier said in a video posted on X.
If approved, the project would mark the first presidential library established in the state of Florida. The Florida Cabinet, comprising Gov. DeSantis and three other Republican officials, will vote next week on whether to dedicate the land for the library. The measure is expected to pass unanimously, which would officially launch the process of bringing Trump’s library to Miami.
