Senator J.D. Vance addressed his hometown in Middletown, Ohio, on July 22, following the announcement of his selection as the vice-presidential nominee alongside President Trump for the most important election in American history. It appeared that thousands of supporters were waiting outside with a mixture of hometown pride, excitement, and anticipation.
Standing before a crowd of enthusiastic supporters, Vance spoke passionately about his hometown roots and the journey that led him to this significant moment when President Trump called him to be his running mate.
Sen. Vance shared a touching moment of being on speakerphone with his son, talking about Pokémon with President Trump.
Sen. Vance recounted the defining moment: “Please stop talking about Pikachu for one second let me take this phone call.” President Trump responded, “Put him on the phone…Young man, what do you think about your dad?” Vance’s oldest son said, “Yeah.”
President Trump showed his personal side, wanting to connect with Vance’s son on a personal level and, most importantly, the American people. Vance stated about President Trump’s character as a family man: “He actually cares about people’s families. He cares about my family, but he cares about your family, too.”
