The U.S. House of Representatives has announced they will start impeachment proceedings against Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, who is in the firing line due to his inability to handle the border crisis adequately.
CNN reported on a statement from the House spokesperson who said, “The House Committee on Homeland Security has conducted a comprehensive investigation into Secretary Mayorkas’ handling of, and role in, the unprecedented crisis at the Southwest border for nearly a year.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., who approved the effort to start the impeachment proceedings, plans to visit the U.S.-Mexico border wall, which has been infiltrated by large numbers of migrants crossing through in the wake of the border crisis. Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green, R-Tenn., is leading the way to impeach Mayorkas.
According to Fox News, Green explained that for “almost three years, the American people have demanded an end to the unprecedented crisis at the Southwest border, and they have also rightly called for Congress to hold accountable those responsible.”
It’s because of Mayorkas’s inability to keep American citizens safe that the House is moving ahead with the impeachment process.
Green further elaborates, “Our investigation made clear that this crisis finds its foundation in Secretary Mayorkas’ decision-making and refusal to enforce the laws passed by Congress and that his failure to fulfill his oath of office demands accountability.”
The first impeachment hearing, aptly named “Havoc in the Heartland: How Secretary Mayorkas’ Failed Leadership Has Impacted the States,” will be held on Jan. 10, according to Fox News.
If Mayorkas gets impeached, he will be the first secretary to be impeached since 1876, according to Fox News. Reuters reported that Mayorkas expressed that he would cooperate with the investigation while continuing to make attempts at managing the border until the final decision is made.
