Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney said she would leave the Republican Party if Donald Trump becomes its presidential nominee in 2024.

Speaking Saturday at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin, Texas, Cheney said, “I think that Donald Trump is the only president in American history who refused to guarantee a peaceful transition of power. And so, the fact that my party, in the months since then, has refused to stand up to him, I think, does tell you how sick the party is.”

She added, “I’m going to make sure Donald Trump is not the nominee, and if he is the nominee, I won’t be a Republican.”

Cheney, who lost to Trump-endorsed Harriet Hageman in August’s Wyoming GOP primary, told NBC News’ “Today” show that she is considering running for president in 2024 with the hopes of preventing President Trump from returning to the White House.

Cheney said, “that’s a decision that I’m going to make in the coming months, and I’m not going to make any announcements here this morning— but it is something that I am thinking about.”

Following her Wyoming primary defeat, Cheney said, “I have said since January 6 that I will do whatever it takes to ensure Donald Trump is never again anywhere near the Oval Office.” She then added: “This primary election is over but
now the real work begins.”

President Trump has often fired back at the Wyoming congresswoman, like when he said the following shortly after Cheney lost the Wyoming primary:

“The Fake News Media continues to push Crazy Liz Cheney and the fact that, despite losing her Wyoming Congressional race to a far superior candidate by an unprecedented 40 points, she has a ‘bright’ political future. Really? I don’t think so, but perhaps that’s why we call it the FAKE NEWS!”
