Federal immigration authorities warned of consequences after a large protest in downtown Los Angeles escalated Saturday, with demonstrators vandalizing a federal building, clashing with law enforcement and prompting multiple arrests.

In a statement, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said it would take threats against agents seriously.

“If you threaten ICE, or their families, you WILL face the full force of federal law,” the agency said. “Our courageous men and women face death threats, just like this, every day. Individuals making the threats will be held accountable.”

Authorities said graffiti reading “Kill your local ICE agent,” along with crosshair symbols, was found on a federal building during the demonstration.

The protest, part of a movement known as “No Kings,” drew tens of thousands of people to the city’s downtown area, including a large rally at Gloria Molina Grand Park near City Hall. Organizers estimated attendance at about 50,000.

The Los Angeles Police Department placed the area on tactical alert and issued a dispersal order around 5:30 p.m. local time, warning demonstrators to leave or face arrest. Officers began taking individuals into custody about 30 minutes later when some refused to comply.

Federal officials reported that violence occurred during the protest. Bill Essayli said federal agents had begun arresting individuals accused of assaulting officers at a courthouse.

“To those who were smashing concrete blocks and throwing them at our officers, we have you on video,” Essayli said. “We will find you and arrest you too. You’ve been warned.”

The Department of Homeland Security said two federal officers were struck by cement blocks and required medical treatment. At least two people were arrested on felony charges related to assaults on federal law enforcement, officials said.

Police cleared most demonstrators from the area by the evening and lifted the tactical alert around 8 p.m. The protest was the third major demonstration organized under the “No Kings” banner in recent months. Organizers have described the movement as a response to policies they view as authoritarian.

City officials had prepared for disruptions by installing barriers along nearby freeway ramps after previous demonstrations spilled onto highways. Authorities said the situation escalated beyond peaceful protest in some areas, with incidents of vandalism, threats against federal agents and physical confrontations reported.
