Jobless claims hit 50-year low under Trump administration

President Trump’s hard work at reviving the country’s economy pays off as applications for U.S. unemployment benefits fell last week to the lowest level in more than five decades.

Breitbart reported that, according to Labor Department data, claims for unemployment insurance reached record lows in the week ending April 25. Claims had declined by 26,000 to 189,000 in just one week. This is a historically low claim, given that economists polled by Reuters predicted the number of claims would be around 215,000 for the latest week. Breitbart reported that in 1967, initial claims were only lower than 189,000 24 times out of 3,095 observations. Now, in 2026, under President Trump, these claims have reached historic numbers.

The data also shows that layoffs remain unusually low by historical standards, with the previous week at 1.79 million, the lowest in two years. In fact, claims that have been equal to the latest reading have occurred only 29 times out of more than 3,000 weeks, or 0.94 percent of the series.

In addition to declining claims for jobless benefits, the country is also seeing an unemployment rate that has held steady throughout April, according to Reuters. Economists agree that this data suggests that the steady labor market will remain in a low-layoff environment.

On top of a steady market, CBS News reported that the U.S. economy grew by an annual rate of 2 percent in the first three months of this year, supported by business demand and increased consumer spending. Despite the ongoing conflict in Iran, economists like Gregory Daco predict that the country’s economy will continue to grow this year.

According to Breitbart, this reduction in jobless benefits claims can be attributed to President Trump’s successful border enforcement and immigration policies. The news outlet reports that these policies have reduced the competition that U.S. workers faced from foreigners arriving in the country. The data is making it clear that businesses are retaining workers, and job security remains strong under President Trump’s rule.
