For the past four presidential election cycles, the Los Angeles Times has endorsed the Democratic candidate. They have a recent history of “swinging left.” Although they did predict that Trump would win in 2016, they have not endorsed a Republican in decades. But this year, they are not endorsing either candidate.
The publication’s modern history of supporting liberals was documented in a 2020 op-ed penned by Sewell Chan. This noted a change of ownership in 2000 that shifted away from GOP support.
The Times did not endorse President George W. Bush, instead choosing to focus on local elections. This trend was carried into the 2004 election until the Barack Obama bandwagon dominated the media and the publication endorsed him in 2008.
Since then every Democratic presidential candidate has received backing from the L.A. Times. This year, the news outlet has made an abrupt change and declined to endorse either candidate in their 2024 endorsement article.
Previously in 2016, the Times endorsed Kamala Harris for Senate, along with their pick for president, Hillary Clinton.
They have yet to publish why they are no longer endorsing the candidate they previously supported.
