As President Donald Trump pushes his “drill baby, drill” energy policies, gas prices on Labor Day weekend have dropped to their lowest point in over five years.

As of Sunday, gas prices averaged $3.154 per gallon nationally, according to Gas Buddy—down an estimated $0.16 per gallon compared to those from Labor Day 2024.

Astonishingly, after the president left office in January 2021 at the end of his first term, gas prices soared dramatically under the Biden administration, increasing $0.87 per gallon by Labor Day weekend.

Prices per gallon later increased to $3.81 by Labor Day 2022, before marginally dropping to $3.79 the following year, and to $3.31 at the same point in 2024.

Furthermore, regular gasoline prices have fallen below $3.00 per gallon across 18 states as of Sunday, according to AAA Fuel Prices, including Georgia, Iowa, North Carolina, and Texas.

As of Sunday, domestic oil prices also fell to $63.96 per barrel, down from $71.15 per barrel on Joe Biden’s last full day in office, OilPrice reported.

The Trump administration celebrated the decrease in gas prices, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announcing during a press conference that, “As Americans make their Labor Day weekend travel plans, they will be able to enjoy five-year low gas prices thanks to President Trump fully unleashing American energy dominance.”

She continued, “President Trump ended Joe Biden’s Green-New-Scam policies, and is delivering on his promise to make America affordable again. These savings at the pump are giving everyday American families more room in their budget at the end of each month, which is the exact opposite of what we saw under the previous administration.”
