Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., called out House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., on Tuesday, suggesting that he is “out of compliance” with the agreements he had made to Republicans to gain the Speaker seat.
“Mr. Speaker you are out of compliance with the agreement that allowed you to assume this role. The path forward for the House of Representatives is to either bring you into immediate total compliance or remove, pursuant to a motion to vacate the chair,” Gaetz stated on the House floor.
Shortly after McCarthy endorsed an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, Gaetz spoke on the House floor, calling the move “not real.” Citing a lack of votes on term limits and balanced budgets, Gaetz reminded the floor that the Speaker had also promised a full release of the Jan. 6 tapes that have yet to come to fruition.
Also noted by the Florida representative was the pace at which the Democrat House led. Gaetz argued that when the Democrats had control of the House last year, they quickly moved on Donald Trump Jr., bringing him in” three times” in relation to the Jan. 6 investigation.
“That’s how you know that the rushed and somewhat rattled performance you saw from the Speaker isn’t real. At this point, during Democrat control over the House of Representatives, they had already brought in Don Jr. three times, and we haven’t even sent the first subpoena to Hunter Biden,” Gaetz continued.
Challenging McCarthy, however, is not new to the Florida representative. During the voting process to pick the Speaker of the House, Gaetz was one of seven Republicans to vote against McCarthy fervently, which led to representatives having to vote 15 times.
“If Democrats bail out McCarthy, as they may do, then I will lead the resistance to this Uniparty and the Biden McCarthy Jeffries government that they are attempting to build. I know that Washington isn’t a town where people are known for keeping their word, well Speaker McCarthy, I’m here to hold you to yours,” Gaetz concluded.
McCarthy has yet to address Gaetz’s latest threats, but earlier this week, the Speaker stated that he is “not at all” worried about removal, according to Axios.
