House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., says the Supreme Court will overturn the decision made by Maine’s Secretary of State to remove President Donald Trump from the ballot, according to a post on X.

In his post, Johnson called Trump’s removal from the ballot “reckless and partisan.”

It is worth noting Johnson is not the only Republican lawmaker who thinks the Supreme Court will issue a reversal. Many GOP lawmakers came to Trump’s defense when a Colorado court ruled to remove Trump from the ballot.

State Rep. John Andrews, R-Maine, wants to pursue impeachment against Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows for disqualifying Trump from the 2024 Republican primary ballot.

Part of Andrews’ reasoning for pursuing impeachment against Bellows is that she “knows the process that put her there is extremely partisan.” He added, “She should know better and be going out of her way to be as neutral as possible to serve every citizen in Maine.”

Bellows defended her position by citing a clause within the 14th Amendment, which was also used by the Colorado State Supreme Court to bar Trump from appearing on their ballot. Both states have drawn backlash from Republican lawmakers because of this decision.

In a post on X, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, called the Colorado Supreme Court ruling “garbage” and believes “this will be appealed to the Supreme Court and the Supreme Court will reverse it.”

Cruz also pointed out that a Supreme Court ruling on this acts as a test of American democracy, arguing partisan judges are preventing American voters from choosing their own candidate.

In a similar way, Republican chairwoman Ronna McDaniel posted on X that Trump’s Colorado ballot removal is “election interference.” She said, “this irresponsible ruling will be appealed to the US Supreme Court and our legal team looks forward to helping fight for a victory.”
