Within the first thirty minutes of counting the results from the Iowa caucus, multiple news outlets have already projected President Donald Trump the winner of Iowa’s 2024 GOP caucus, the first primary contest of the presidential primaries.
Outlets such as the New York Times, CNN, CBS, and Fox News have declared Trump the winner of the key state, beating candidates such as former S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley, Fla. Gov. Ron DeSantis, and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy.
Although just one percent of the results have been reported, Trump so far has a 40-point lead over DeSantis, the state’s current second place finisher (57.1 percent to 17.2 percent as of 8:45 P.M. ET).
Trump’s lead has held up to be the largest for any candidate, Republican or Democrat, in the history of the Iowa caucus.
Former Sen. Bob Dole, R-Kan., won the Iowa caucus by 12-points in 1988, which has historically been the biggest margin of victory for a Republican in the state’s caucus, according to the Washington Post.
No candidate, Republican or Democrat, had also garnered an outright majority of the vote in Iowa. Former Democrat Vice President Walter Mondale was closest to a majority with 49 percent in 1984.
Candidates will now shift focus towards winning New Hampshire’s GOP primary, which is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 23.
