Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, alluded to supporting Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) in a potential 2024 presidential campaign.
After announcing that he had voted for Republican Maya Flores in the Special Election for South Texas’s 34th congressional district this week, Musk suggested on Twitter that he may be leaning toward voting for DeSantis in 2024.
“I supported Yang last time,” Musk said, “but DeSantis has a better chance of winning.”
Gov. DeSantis has become wildly popular among Americans for his staunch conservative leadership and strong approach to combatting Joe Biden’s policies on immigration, the economy, the pandemic, and many more issues.
On Thursday, DeSantis was asked about Musk’s potential support in a 2024 presidential bid. “I’m focused on 2022,” DeSantis quipped, “but with Elon Musk what I would say is, you know, I welcome support from African Americans.”
Elon Musk made waves in May when he announced that he would be voting Republican shortly after his bid to buy Twitter for $44 billion was accepted.
“In the past I voted Democrat, because they were (mostly) the kindness party,” he stated on Twitter. “But they have become the party of division & hate, so I can no longer support them and will vote Republican.”
Gov. DeSantis has not officially announced any plans for running for president in 2024. He has instead maintained that he is focused on 2022.
Most Republicans expect President Donald Trump to announce another bid for the presidency after the 2022 midterms. However, a recent report from NBC News projected that the 45th president was considering making an announcement sooner.
Interestingly, Musk’s choice for president in the last election, Andrew Yang, responded to the Tesla CEO’s comments on Twitter, stating, “I’m not sure who the Republicans put in 24’ – it looks like Trump to me.”
