The House of Representatives on Tuesday strongly rejected an impeachment resolution filed by Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, against President Donald Trump over his authorization of recent military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Green’s resolution, which accused Trump of violating the Constitution’s War Powers Clause by ordering the June 21 airstrikes without consulting Congress, was tabled in a bipartisan 344-79 vote, with more than 100 Democrats joining GOP lawmakers. The measure marked Green’s second attempt to impeach Trump since he began his second term in office earlier this year.
“I take no delight in what I’m doing. I do this because I love my country,” Green said from the House floor. “If I do not, this authoritarian president that we currently have will continue to assume power.”
Green’s resolution came in response to U.S. strikes on three Iranian nuclear enrichment sites, which the Trump administration said were carried out to prevent an imminent threat. Critics, including Green and several progressive Democrats, argued that the president should have sought congressional approval before the operation.
While initial reports indicated Trump had bypassed Congress entirely, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt later confirmed that the president had spoken with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and attempted to reach House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., before the strikes were launched.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., defended the president’s actions, calling them justified under the circumstances.
“Leaders in Congress were aware of the urgency of this situation,” Johnson posted on X. “The Commander-in-Chief evaluated that the imminent danger outweighed the time it would take for Congress to act.”
The House vote saw 128 Democrats join all 216 Republicans in rejecting Green’s resolution. Among those voting to move forward were progressive lawmakers Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., both of whom had publicly criticized the strike.
In response, Trump mocked them in a Truth Social post, daring them to try impeaching him to “MAKE MY DAY.”
Green has a long history of introducing impeachment resolutions against Trump. During Trump’s first term, the Texas Democrat filed three separate measures seeking his removal. None gained significant traction.
