President Donald Trump may soon make history in Minnesota. Recent polls suggest he could be the first Republican to carry the once-reliably blue state in a presidential election for the first time in 52 years.
According to the latest survey from KSTP/SurveyUSA, Joe Biden leads his chief rival by two points (44 to 42 percent) in the state, while nine percent claimed they would likely vote for a third-party candidate.
The survey of 625 Likely Voters also had a reported 4.3 percent Margin of Error, putting the state well within the grasp of both major party candidates.
Moreover, President Trump’s ongoing trials out of Manhattan do not appear to have negatively affected his campaign, as his support has even moderately increased by four points since he held 38 percent in February.
The majority of the survey’s respondents further said that they would likely support the 45th president if he were “found guilty” in the trial. Eighty-eight percent pledged to continue supporting President Trump, while just five percent said that they would “Switch To Another Party.”
Interestingly, none of the respondents said they would switch their vote to Biden, the poll found.
Joe Biden ultimately won Minnesota by 7.5 points four years ago. However, his previous victory has seemingly not carried into the upcoming election, as his support has seriously faltered.
The incumbent led his Republican counterpart by 8.5 points in Minnesota during this same time from 2020, according to Real Clear Politics, but now his share has fallen to average just 2.3 percent against President Trump.
More importantly, Joe Biden’s support in major metropolitan areas like the Twin Cities (St. Paul and Minneapolis) has seriously plummeted from four years ago.
In 2020, Biden received more than 70 of the votes in Hennepin and Ramsey County during the 2020 election, although the latest polling showed him with just 50 percent to President Trump’s 35 percent in the Twin Cities.
In a possible play for the state, President Trump will even return to Minnesota on Friday, May 17, to deliver remarks during the state’s GOP Lincoln Reagan Dinner.
Minnesota has been a Democrat state in every presidential race for decades. In fact, no Republicans since Richard Nixon in 1972 have won the state in their bid for the Oval Office.
Should President Trump carry Minnesota, the state’s 10 Electoral Votes could break the 270 minimum electoral threshold and elect him as the 47th President of the United States.
