President Trump issued harsh criticism against Democrats on Tuesday for their attempts to interfere with the administration’s use of tariffs to stop the flow of fentanyl into the United States.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump specifically called out Tim Kaine, D-Va., for his support of measures that would obstruct the administration’s efforts to combat the influx of illegal fentanyl into the country. Kaine has introduced a resolution that would end the emergency declaration, which has allowed tariffs to be imposed on Canada in response to the fentanyl crisis.
“Senator Tim Kaine, who ran against me with Crooked Hillary in 2016, is trying to halt our critical Tariffs on deadly Fentanyl coming in from Canada,” Trump said. “We are making progress to end this terrible Fentanyl Crisis, but Republicans in the Senate MUST vote to keep the National Emergency in place, so we can finish the job, and end the scourge.”
The administration has issued a 25 percent tariff on goods from Canada, Mexico and China due, in part, to the lack of controls in place to stop the flow of fentanyl. Trump pointed out the quick progress of his administration in the fight against illegal drugs crossing the border.
“By their weakness, the Democrats have allowed Fentanyl to get out of hand. The Republicans and I have reversed that course, strongly and quickly,” Trump said. “Major additional progress is being made. Don’t let the Democrats have a Victory. It would be devastating for the Republican Party and, far more importantly, for the United States. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
The Senate is expected to vote on Kaine’s proposed resolution on Wednesday. Trump administration officials have indicated the president would be willing to veto the measure if it passes.
