President Donald Trump on Thursday criticized Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., in a social media post that questioned her citizenship and spoke against her birth country of Somalia.

The remarks came as Omar faced a censure attempt from Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., tied to comments about the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The resolution failed in the House earlier this week.

In a Truth Social post Thursday night, Trump wrote, “Ilhan Omar’s Country of Somalia is plagued by a lack of central Government control, persistent Poverty, Hunger, Resurgent Terrorism, Piracy, decades of Civil War, Corruption, and pervasive Violence. 70% of the population lives in extreme Poverty, and widespread Food Insecurity.

“Somalia is consistently ranked among the World’s Most Corrupt Countries, including Bribery, Embezzlement, and a Dysfunctional Government. All of this, and Ilhan Omar tells us how to run America! P.S. Wasn’t she the one that married her brother in order to gain Citizenship??? What SCUM we have in our Country, telling us what to do, and how to do it. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Omar responded earlier this week to Mace’s censure effort, dismissing it as baseless. “Fun fact: Nancy Mace is trying to censure me over comments I never said. Her res does not contain a single quote from me because she couldn’t find any,” Omar wrote on X. “Unlike her, I have routinely condemned political violence, no matter the political ideology.”

She added, “This is all an attempt to push a false story so she can fundraise and boost her run for Governor.”

Mike Flood, R-Neb., also announced on Thursday that he will refer Omar for a House Ethics Committee investigation.

“I will be filing tomorrow … a complaint with the Committee on Ethics in the House of Representatives with 18 very concerning incidents and/or behaviors and/or statements that, on their face, reflect poorly on the House of Representatives,” Flood said.

In addition to concerns about Omar’s comments concerning Kirk, Flood noted, “I believe in February of this year that Omar hosted a workshop advising Somalians on how to avoid being deported after protecting the laws of the United States,” Flood continued regarding his points. “No. 3, she’s used TikTok for mixed official and campaign content, which specifically violates other House rules.”
