President Donald Trump has just called on Americans to show their support for the National Rifle Association in their ongoing battle against New York State Attorney General Letitia James (D).
Trump stated on Truth Social that “Everybody has to step up and support the National Rifle Association (NRA) against the ‘Racist In Reverse’ New York State Attorney General, Letitia James, who is fighting with every ounce of her strength, which shouldn’t be much, to destroy the NRA, and the Republican Party along with it. Her ‘Office’ is consumed with the NRA (and me), with massive amounts of time, money, and effort devoted to this as opposed to stopping the record setting VIOLENT and other crimes in New York State!!!”
AG James has had a long-standing gripe with the NRA. Back in 2020, James lobbied to break up the NRA alleging, as reported by the New York Post, that “the pro-gun group’s Executive Vice-President Wayne LaPierre and other top brass broke state and federal laws by mismanaging the organization’s funds — contributing to a swing from a nearly $28 million surplus in 2015 to a $36 million deficit in 2018.”
The lawsuit effectively states that top NRA executives, including LaPierre, were misusing funds for personal gain, which the NRA denies. The case is still ongoing, and many see it as an attack on the NRA’s advocacy for gun rights.
The ongoing lawsuit has renewed attention on the NRA’s history and role in American politics.
AG James’ preoccupation with the NRA is compounded by what President Trump correctly wrote late in the same TruthSocial post about Attorney General’s resources not being used to actually tackle the violent crime issues plaguing the state of New York.
In fact, in January, it was reported that “NYPD statistics show serious assaults surged more than 18% compared to the same period in 2022.”
Even more shocking are the realizations that “rapes were also up nearly 16% and robberies and burglaries rose 9.4% and 5.5%, respectively, for an overall 3.4% increase in year-to-date major crimes, according to NYPD statistics.”
The NRA has been a long-standing ally of former President Donald Trump, who has pledged to defend the Second Amendment and protect the rights of gun owners. Throughout his presidency, Trump worked closely with the NRA to prevent restrictive gun control measures and uphold the rights of law-abiding citizens to own firearms.
During the 2016 presidential campaign, the NRA endorsed Trump, citing his unwavering support for the Second Amendment and his commitment to protecting the rights of gun owners. Trump, in turn, promised to defend the Second Amendment and prevent any infringements on Americans’ right to bear arms.
Once in office, Trump fulfilled his promises to the NRA by appointing leaders of the organization to key positions in his administration and, according to USA Today, signing a bill that repealed an Obama-era regulation that made it harder for people with mental illnesses to buy guns. Trump also spoke at the NRA’s annual convention, where he reaffirmed his support for gun owners and their rights.
Despite facing pressure from Democrats to pass gun control measures, Trump remained steadfast in his support for the Second Amendment. The NRA continued to back him during his reelection campaign in 2020, recognizing him as the best candidate to protect the rights of gun owners.
