President Trump is renewing his rallying cry for congressional Republicans to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act. On Thursday, Trump shared two posts on Truth Social, calling on Republicans to take action and energetically pursue passage of the bill.
In his first post, President Trump described the SAVE America Act as vital to the country’s future and urged lawmakers to pass the legislation as is rather than draft a weakened version.
“The Republicans MUST DO, with PASSION, and at the expense of everything else, THE SAVE AMERICA ACT – And not the watered down version.” President Trump said. “This is a Country Defining fight for the Soul of our Nation!”
Trump followed up with another post outlining specific provisions of the SAVE America Act. Although they are not a part of the SAVE America Act, Trump included legislative priorities for protections of women in sports and bans on transgender surgeries for minors.
“THE SAVE AMERICA ACT! 1. ALL VOTERS MUST SHOW VOTER I.D. (IDENTIFICATION!). 2. ALL VOTERS MUST SHOW PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP IN ORDER TO VOTE. 3. NO MAIL-IN BALLOTS (EXCEPT FOR ILLNESS, DISABILITY, MILITARY, OR TRAVEL!).” President Trump said. “4. NO MEN IN WOMEN’S SPORTS. 5. NO TRANSGENDER MUTILATION SURGERY FOR CHILDREN.”
The SAVE America Act requires states to obtain proof of U.S. citizenship to process voter registrations for federal elections. Documentation verifying citizenship must comply with the REAL ID Act of 2005. Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives voted unanimously last month to pass the SAVE America Act. The legislation is currently being considered in the Senate. Republican lawmakers are urging Senate Majority Leader John Thune to take action on the bill, including potentially enforcing a standing filibuster to overcome Democratic opposition.
