President Donald Trump on Sunday congratulated Rory McIlroy after the golfer captured his second consecutive title at The Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia.
McIlroy finished the tournament at 12-under par, defeating Scottie Scheffler by one stroke to secure the win and claim the event’s signature green jacket for the second straight year.
“Congratulations to Rory McIlroy on another Great Championship, The Masters! He performed tremendously under intense pressure, something which few people would be able to even think about doing,” he wrote on social media.
“With each year, Rory is becoming more and more a LEGEND! I look forward to watching him compete in two weeks at Doral. The quality of Professional Golfers today has become extraordinary, each and every one of them. They should all be proud of the way they played at The Masters this weekend! President DONALD J. TRUMP,” the president added.
The president also posted a picture of the golfer with his father at Trump International Golf Club to Truth Social, stating, “Rory, and his father Gerry, also a very good Golfer, at Trump International Golf Club, Palm Beach County, Florida!”
With the victory, McIlroy joins an elite group of golfers, including Tiger Woods, Nick Faldo and Jack Nicklaus, who have won the tournament in back-to-back years.
The win also earned McIlroy a record $4.5 million prize, the largest payout in the tournament’s history. The Masters remains one of golf’s most prestigious events, drawing the sport’s top players each year to Augusta National Golf Club.
President Trump, who owns multiple golf properties worldwide, has previously played with McIlroy and has taken a public interest in the sport, including its recent divisions between the PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit.
McIlroy has said President Trump’s influence in the golf world extends internationally, particularly in the Middle East, where competing tours have sought to expand their reach.
