This week, the Supreme Court protected religious rights, gun rights, and the right to life. In doing so, the court’s majority followed the Constitution and did not engage in judicial activism from the bench. As the nation digests the various opinions, it also owes President Donald Trump tremendous gratitude for appointing constitutionalist justices to the bench.
In 2019, President Trump commented, “It is up to us to reclaim our heritage of equal and impartial justice. It is up to us to re-dedicate ourselves to the traditions and wisdom of our Founders.”
With that goal in mind, he appointed federal judges and Supreme Court justices who would uphold the Constitution as written. When he nominated now-Justice Neil Gorsuch, Trump said, in part, “Judge Gorsuch has a superb intellect, an unparalleled legal education, and a commitment to interpreting the Constitution according to its text.”
The recent opinions in Carson v. Makin, New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, and Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization were decided on constitutional grounds and the “Nation’s history and tradition.” The majority did not engage in improper legislation or judicial activism from the bench. Rather, the justices applied the Constitution and historical context when formulating the various decisions.
Americans owe President Trump a tremendous amount of gratitude.
The justices he appointed are constitutionalists who follow the law and who make sure that the Constitution is followed. They are not worried about being popular or appeasing a particular political party or special interest group. Rather, they are there to uphold the Constitution and ensure it is followed.
While some will obviously disagree with one or more of the court’s rulings, all Americans should commend the court’s concerted effort to follow the law and the Constitution.
During a 2016 campaign rally in Greensboro, North Carolina, then-candidate Donald Trump made the following promise, “We’re going to appoint great justices to the United States Supreme Court to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
As president, he delivered.
