President Donald Trump on Tuesday endorsed Texas Gov. Greg Abbott for re-election, giving the Republican leader his “Complete and Total Endorsement” as Abbott seeks an unprecedented fourth term in office.
“Greg Abbott has my Complete and Total Endorsement for Re-Election. He is an exceptional Governor and man — HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
In his full endorsement statement, the president called Abbott “strong and highly respected,” praising his leadership for securing five new MAGA-aligned congressional seats, cutting taxes, supporting law enforcement, and maintaining what he described as a “very secure border.”
“Thanks to Greg’s bold and effective leadership,” President Trump wrote, “the wonderful people of Texas will have the opportunity to elect five new MAGA Republicans in the 2026 midterms.”
The president praised Abbott’s record on border security and conservative reforms, crediting him with helping to secure GOP dominance in Texas through redistricting efforts earlier this year.
Abbott, who officially launched his campaign Sunday, thanked President Trump for his backing and pledged to continue working alongside him to “build a stronger, safer, more prosperous Texas and America,” according to The Texas Tribune.
Abbott and President Trump have maintained close political and policy alignment throughout their time in office. Following a phone call with Trump earlier this year, Abbott added mid-decade congressional redistricting to the agenda for a special legislative session in a move that prompted national headlines after Democratic lawmakers fled the state to block a vote.
The redistricting plan Abbott later signed into law is expected to create five new Republican-leaning congressional districts, further strengthening GOP control in Texas. The move also led California Gov. Gavin Newsom to pursue similar efforts to favor Democrats in his state.
If re-elected, Abbott would be the first Texas governor to serve four terms. Former Gov. Rick Perry currently holds the record for longest-serving governor, with three full terms from 2000 to 2015.
