President Trump forms surprising alliance on affordability issue

President Trump is reaching across the aisle to take action on a key affordability issue affecting American consumers. On Monday, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Ma., shared that Trump called herfollowing a speech at a National Press Club event in which she criticized his record.

“In my remarks, I made it clear that despite promising to lower costs On Day One, Trump has done nothing but raise costs for families,” Sen. Warren said. “I said that if he really wants to get something done, including capping credit card interest rates or lowering housing costs, he would use his leverage and pick up the phone.”

President Trump reached out to Warren after her speech to discuss potential policy proposals. Sen. Warren stated that she shared her ideas for reducing costs directly with Trump, including capping credit card interest rates and passing housing legislation.

“After my speech, the President called me, and I delivered this same message on affordability to him directly,” Sen. Warren said. “I told him that Congress can pass legislation to cap credit card rates if he will actually fight for it. I also urged him to get House Republicans to pass the bipartisan ROAD to Housing Act, which passed the Senate with unanimous support and would build more housing and lower costs. No more delays. It’s time to deliver relief for American families.”

A White House official said the call between President Trump and Sen. Warren was productive. The potential collaboration is surprising given the historic rivalry between the two. However, the president has recently expressed policy objectives that may bring him into at least a temporary alignment with Warren.

On Jan. 9, President Trump shared a Truth Social post stating his goal of tackling credit card interest rates and delivering savings for Americans. As part of his overall affordability agenda, Trump called for a drastic reduction in credit card interest rates and proposed a 10 percent cap.

“Please be informed that we will no longer let the American Public be ‘ripped off’ by Credit Card Companies that are charging Interest Rates of 20 to 30%, and even more, which festered unimpeded during the Sleepy Joe Biden Administration,” President Trump said. “AFFORDABILITY! Effective January 20, 2026, I, as President of the United States, am calling for a one year cap on Credit Card Interest Rates of 10%. Coincidentally, the January 20th date will coincide with the one year anniversary of the historic and very successful Trump Administration. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
