In a message released on Tuesday, President Trump took time to celebrate the legacy of one of his predecessors, President Dwight D. Eisenhower. In a powerful tribute, Trump acknowledged President Eisenhower’s monumental contributions to the nation and his lasting impact on American politics.
On what would have been President Eisenhower’s 134th birthday, President Trump described him as “a visionary leader, and an enduring icon of duty, service, and discipline.”
President Eisenhower ascended to the presidency after a stunning record of military achievement. He served as the commanding general of American forces during World War II, ultimately leading the successful Allied invasion of Normandy on D-Day in 1944. He then won a decisive victory in his 1952 presidential campaign to become the nation’s 34th president.
President Trump praised Eisenhower for his military leadership and his role in the ultimate victory of the Allied forces during World War II.
“Guided by his extraordinary commitment to public service, he rose to the height of his military career as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force during World War II,” President Trump said. “On June 6, 1944, he orchestrated the epic D-Day invasion of Normandy—playing a key role in freedom’s triumph over tyranny.”
Trump also noted the parallels between Eisenhower’s presidential campaign and his own, including both their electoral success and their status as non-traditional politicians. “In 1952, a wave of patriotic unity carried Eisenhower to the White House in a landslide—the last political outsider to become president until I was first elected in 2016,” President Trump said.
Trump continued by praising Eisenhower’s achievements while in office, including his focus on peace through strength and his development of domestic trade.
“As President, Eisenhower led by a principle that we still abide by today: Peace can only be secured through American strength,” President Trump said. “He understood that our country must be stable and prosperous within its borders before extending commitments overseas.”
Trump concluded by vowing his administration would remain true to Eisenhower’s vision for the country.
“As my Administration continues to promote prosperity at home and peace abroad, we recommit to furthering President Eisenhower’s America First vision,” President Trump said. “We honor his legacy, we salute his courage, and we commit to carrying that radiant torch of liberty into the future. Happy birthday, President Eisenhower!”
