President Donald Trump announced Thursday that Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, have been invited to visit the White House on Sept. 24.
“We look forward to it,” the president said during remarks at a banquet in Beijing.
President Trump described the latest U.S.-China summit as a “fantastic day” and “historic,” saying discussions between the two countries had been “extremely positive and productive.”
During public remarks at the banquet, President Trump and Xi appeared cordial, with both leaders praising each other’s leadership and broader vision for relations between the world’s two largest economies.
Behind closed doors, however, discussions were more contentious, particularly regarding Taiwan, which emerged as a major point of tension during the talks.
“Today, President Trump and I had in-depth exchanges on China-U.S. relations and the international and regional dynamics. We both believe that the China-U.S. relationship is the most important bilateral relationship in the world. We must make it work and never mess it up,” Xi said through a translator.
“Both China and the United States stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation. Our two countries should be partners rather than rivals. President Trump and I also agreed to build a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability to promote the steady, sound and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations and bring more peace, prosperity and progress to the world,” Xi said.
A statement released by the White House following the meetings did not mention Taiwan.
If the September meeting takes place as planned, it would mark the third in-person meeting between President Trump and Xi during Trump’s second term. The two leaders previously met in South Korea in October.
Xi’s most recent visit to the United States occurred in November 2023, when he met with former President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco.
