Victor Willis, the original lead singer of the Village People, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 74. The group’s hit song, “Y.M.C.A.” became a staple feature during President Trump’s campaign rallies. President Trump honored Willis in a Truth Social post on Wednesday, celebrating his spirit and pointing out the impact of the group’s classic song.

“Village People singer Victor Willis is dead at 74,” President Trump said. “He was a great and happy guy who loved that I used his group’s song, YMCA, at my Rallies.”

Willis was a founding member of The Village People in the 1970s. The group produced several hits during the disco era, including “Macho Man,” “Go West,” “In the Navy,” and the iconic “Y.M.C.A.” Willis embarked on a solo career in 1979, but rejoined The Village People in 2017.

Trump noted the song’s resurgence in popularity after it was featured at his campaign rallies, and pointed out that Willis and the band were early supporters.

“It became a “monster” hit, again, 30 years after its original launch,” President Trump said. “Many singers and groups wanted to get on board at the Rallies after all of the Rally Attendance Records were set – The crowds were, and are, enormous – But Victor and the group was there for us right from the beginning!”

After his 2024 presidential election victory, Trump held a victory rally on January 19, 2025, in Washington, D.C., before being sworn in on January 20. The Village People joined the celebration with a memorable performance of “Y.M.C.A.” Trump reflected on the song’s impact and expressed his respect for Willis’ family in the wake of his passing.

“They loved the action, and we loved them and their great and uplifting song,” President Trump said. “We will think of Victor every time YMCA is played, like today, and all throughout this July Fourth Birthday week. My condolences to his wonderful family and group, Victor Willis will be sorely missed, God Bless Him!!!”
