President Donald Trump returned attention to Greenland with a surprise announcement late Sunday.
In a post on Truth Social, Donald Trump said he is appointing Jeff Landry as the United States Special Envoy to Greenland.
“I am pleased to announce that I am appointing the GREAT Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, as the United States Special Envoy to Greenland,” President Trump wrote Sunday night.
President Trump said Landry “understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country’s Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World.”
“Congratulations Jeff!” the president added.
The announcement comes as the administration faces heightened global tensions, including aggressive actions in the Caribbean and stalled peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has long been viewed by U.S. officials as strategically important because of its location in the Arctic and proximity to key shipping lanes and military routes.
President Trump has previously expressed interest in expanding the U.S. presence in Greenland, citing national security concerns and growing competition in the Arctic. While there has been no formal proposal outlining Landry’s role or objectives as envoy, the move signals renewed attention from the White House toward the region.
“Thank you @realDonaldTrump! It’s an honor to serve you in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the U.S. This in no way affects my position as Governor of Louisiana!” Landry posted to X late Sunday.
The president has previously spoken of Greenland becoming part of the U.S., including during his speech to a Joint Session of Congress in March.
“And I also have a message tonight for the incredible people of Greenland. We strongly support your right to determine your own future, and if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America,” President Trump began.
“We need Greenland for national security and even international security. And we’re working with everybody involved to try and get it. But we need it really for international world security. And I think we’re going to get it. One way or the other, we’re going to get it,” Trump continued.
