President Donald Trump’s 2026 Memorial Day proclamation calls on Americans to remember the sacrifices of fallen service members and reflect on the cost of preserving freedom as the nation nears its 250th anniversary.

In the proclamation, the president described the U.S. military as “the greatest fighting force the world has ever known” and honored the “selfless men and women who safeguard our liberty and preserve our way of life.”

The president emphasized that Memorial Day is a time to remember Americans who died defending the nation throughout its nearly 250-year history. He wrote that “countless souls have lost their lives in this noble and righteous pursuit” and stated, “On Memorial Day, we honor these American heroes.”

President Trump also reflected on the personal cost carried by military families, noting that Americans enjoy liberty “purchased with the spilled blood of brave warriors and the tears and heartache of those they left behind.” He added that the sacrifices made by fallen troops deserve “our eternal reverence and unwavering gratitude every day.”

The proclamation called on Americans to unite in prayer during the observance. “The First Lady and I ask you to join us in prayer for lasting peace in this volatile world,” Trump wrote, while also praying “for the protection of those in harm’s way” and comfort for grieving families.

As part of the proclamation, Trump formally designated Memorial Day, May 25, 2026, as “a day of prayer for permanent peace.” He encouraged Americans to join in prayer beginning at 11 a.m. local time and to observe the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. local time.

The president also requested that governors and government officials direct flags to be flown at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day at government buildings, grounds, and naval vessels across the country. Citizens were similarly encouraged to display American flags at half-staff during the morning hours.

Memorial Day honors U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the Armed Forces and is observed nationwide through ceremonies, cemetery tributes, parades, and moments of silence. This year’s observance carries additional significance as the United States prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence later this summer.
