In speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday, President Trump said Iran was stopping executions of political protestors.
“We have been informed by very important sources on the other side that the killing has stopped and the executions won’t take place,” President Trump said. “There were supposed to be a lot of executions today and the executions won’t take place.”
When asked if the information was reliable, President Trump said the administration had been informed of the halt in executions but would have to wait and see what happened. “We’ve been told on good authority and I hope it’s true,” Trump said.
Reporters followed up by asking if the U.S. would hold off on military action in response to Iran stopping the executions. “We’re going to watch and see what the process is,” Trump said. “But we were given a very good, very good statement by people that are aware of what’s going on.”
The potential executions come amid mass citizen protests in Iran against the regime of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei over economic concerns, including high inflation and devalued currency. Since late December 2025, at least 881 protests have occurred nationwide. Thousands of civilians have reportedly been killed during the regime’s harsh crackdown in response to the protests. President Trump previously warned that the U.S. would intervene if Iranian leadership continued its practice of killing peaceful protestors.
The president followed his Oval Office statements on Wednesday with a Truth Social post, indicating his hope that relations could improve between the U.S. and Iran in response to restraint from the Iranian regime.
“FoxNews: “Iranian protester will no longer be sentenced to death after President Trump’s warnings. Likewise others.” This is good news. Hopefully, it will continue!” President Trump said.
