President Donald Trump will travel to South Dakota next week to participate in an Independence Day celebration at Mount Rushmore as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary festivities.
South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden announced Thursday that Trump will attend a fireworks display at the historic monument during the three-day Fourth of July weekend.
“It is my honor to welcome President Trump to the great state of South Dakota,” Rhoden said in a statement.
“Together, we will throw the biggest birthday party ever for our nation and celebrate America’s legacy of freedom, liberty, and justice for all,” he added.
Rhoden also announced the president’s visit in a post to X on Thursday.
“It is my honor to welcome President Trump to the great state of South Dakota – the freest state in a nation founded on the principles of freedom. Together, we will throw the biggest birthday party ever for our nation and celebrate America’s legacy of freedom, liberty, and justice for all!” Rhoden wrote.
The visit comes as the Trump administration continues promoting events commemorating America’s 250th anniversary.
During Wednesday’s kickoff of the Great American State Fair on the National Mall, Trump praised the nation’s history while looking ahead to its future.
“This anniversary is a time to be proud of our past, but it is also a time to lift our sights, expand our ambitions and raise our expectations of what America can be,” Trump said.
“We will leave our children nothing less than the richest inheritance, most advanced civilization and highest standard of living in human history. There’s never been anything like it, but with all of that being said, the best is yet to come,” he added.
Mount Rushmore features the carved likenesses of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. The president’s visit follows other efforts by the administration to highlight patriotic themes during the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration.
