President Trump has announced a change in the plan for federal involvement in the crackdown on crime in San Francisco. In response to a request from San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, the administration will hold off on deploying the National Guard and give local authorities the chance to resolve the issue. On Thursday, President Trump shared the update on Truth Social.

“The Federal Government was preparing to ‘surge’ San Francisco, California, on Saturday, but friends of mine who live in the area called last night to ask me not to go forward with the surge in that the Mayor, Daniel Lurie, was making substantial progress,” President Trump said. “I spoke to Mayor Lurie last night and he asked, very nicely, that I give him a chance to see if he can turn it around.”

The request comes after the Trump administration has seen success in utilizing the National Guard to combat crime in other major cities in the U.S. President Trump noted that he believed the federal government would be able to combat the crime epidemic more effectively than local forces, but agreed the local government should be given the opportunity to address the situation.

“I told him I think he is making a mistake, because we can do it much faster, and remove the criminals that the Law does not permit him to remove,” President Trump said. “I told him, “It’s an easier process if we do it, faster, stronger, and safer but, let’s see how you do?”

Trump added that the issue of crime was important to local residents. He also recognized powerful industry leaders in San Francisco, including President and CEO of NVIDIA, Jensen Huang, and CEO of Salesforce, Marc Benioff and indicated they were supportive of local efforts to address the crime problem.

“The people of San Francisco have come together on fighting Crime, especially since we began to take charge of that very nasty subject,” President Trump said. “Great people like Jensen Huang, Marc Benioff, and others have called saying that the future of San Francisco is great. They want to give it a “shot.” Therefore, we will not surge San Francisco on Saturday. Stay tuned!”
