As President Trump gears up for what will be an intense presidential bid in 2024, many in the Make America Great Again movement reflected on Tuesday on the five-year anniversary of one of Trump’s biggest presidential victories.
In 2017, President Trump officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, moving the U.S. Embassy into the city. Per the MAGA War Room account, “…Bill Clinton promised to do it. George W. Bush promised to do it. Barack Obama promised to do it. But only one president actually did it. #PromisesMadePromisesKept[.]”
As reported by Fox News, President Trump ordered the State Department in 2017 to begin moving the U.S. Embassy out of Tel Aviv and into Jerusalem. The outlet further noted that during remarks delivered at the White House, Trump said, “There will of course be disagreement and dissent regarding this announcement. But we are confident that ultimately, as we work through these disagreements, we will arrive at a peace and place far greater in understanding and cooperation.”
According to the Trump White House Archives, Trump’s move to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital delivered on a campaign promise to conservative and religious voters in the U.S.:
- “After decades of past Presidents committing to move the Embassy to Jerusalem on the campaign trail, only to renege on those promises while in office, President Trump has fulfilled his promise to support one of America’s strongest allies.
- More than two decades of waivers delaying the Embassy move brought us no closer to a lasting peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.
- President Trump has made clear that old challenges demand new approaches, and that he will keep his word to the American people.”
The U.S. Embassy officially opened in Jerusalem in 2018, marking 70 years exactly since President Truman recognized Israel as an independent country, per the White House Archives.
