With just one day until California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s recall election, Joe Biden will travel to the Golden State to stump for his Democrat ally amid what is expected to be record voter turnout across the state.
Biden, whose whose approval rating has plummeted in recent months, will urge Californians to vote against the recall.
As millions of votes pour in, early reports indicate that the projected turnout for the election will be a record-breaking 70 percent. If that estimate proves to be correct, voter turnout will have surpassed that of the 2003 gubernatorial recall election, which was about 66.7 percent, according to the San Diego County Communications Office.
More than 1.96 million mail-in ballots have been issued in San Diego County. 815,000, or 42.01 percent, have been returned so far.
Joe Biden on Monday will travel to California to give a last-minute appeal to voters as to why they should vote “no” on the recall, following after Kamala Harris who stumped for the disgraced governor last week.
“What’s happening in Texas, what’s happening in Georgia, what’s happening around our country with these policies that are about attacking women’s rights, reproductive rights, voting rights, worker rights, they think if they can win in California, they can do this anywhere,” said Harris.
Californians are being asked two questions in the recall election. The first question asks whether the governor should be removed from office. The second asks voters to choose what candidate should replace Newsom.
If more than 50 percent of voters vote “yes” to remove the governor, the replacement candidate who wins the most votes will become governor.
