After being ousted from his post as Speaker of the House, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., announced that he would soon be resigning from Congress entirely.
McCarthy made the shocking announcement in an opinion piece for the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, Fox News reported.
“I have decided to depart the House at the end of this year to serve America in new ways. I know my work is only getting started,” McCarthy announced.
However, per Fox News, McCarthy said this would not be the last of his involvement in politics. He added that he will continue to work to aid the Republican Party’s recruitment efforts to get the “country’s best and brightest to run for elected office.”
He continued, “The Republican Party is expanding every day, and I am committed to lending my experience to support the next generation of leaders.”
The congressman’s announcement to leave Congress comes just about two months after the House voted to remove him as the Speaker of the House.
According to analysis by RSBN’s Summer Lane, this marked the first time in American history that a Speaker of the House has been successfully removed. The Washington Post reported that the last motion to vacate was brought forth in 1910 against then-Republican Speaker Joseph G. Cannon from Illinois, but it failed on the floor.
McCarthy’s resignation will take effect at the end of 2023, per Axios.
