For the past few weeks, Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., has been fighting to bring U.S. troops home from Syria and contesting America’s financial involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war.
This comes as Republicans lead a new investigation into the Biden administration’s controversial 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Gaetz had introduced a bill to remove troops from Syria, but that failed to pass the house last week, per AP News. Despite this, he posted on Twitter, “my fight to end forever wars and bring our troops home has only just begun.”
On Tuesday, he continued this battle, condemning the $100 billion in American funding sent to Ukraine as well as the recent loss of an MQ-9 Reaper drone.
This comes as the House is also investigating the serious details of the Biden administration’s Afghanistan withdrawal. While the Trump administration had planned a methodical withdrawal over time, Biden led a hasty removal which left $7 billion in military equipment in the hands of the Taliban, according to CNN.
Just last week, veterans of the Afghanistan war offered their testimony of what happened during the withdrawal, per The Guardian. Chaos and panic were commonly noted, as was one serviceman’s account that he spotted two suspects matching descriptions of those known to be plotting attacks, but was not given clearance to act.
13 soldiers were murdered in the attack that was carried out that day. Meanwhile, an estimated 1,000 Americans remain trapped in the area along with 200,000 allies.
Continued efforts to support wars in various other nations have cost the United States American lives and taxpayer dollars. Rep. Gaetz’s mission to end this pattern continues, with growing support from other colleagues.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., described the need to remove U.S. troops from Syria, per Newsweek. She wrote, “Members of Congress don’t swear an oath to the people of Syria, Ukraine, or anywhere else. They swear an oath to the people of the United States.”
This sentiment is being voiced by those who wish to put America First. Matt Gaetz recently tweeted, “END FOREVER WARS!”
