Rep. Mayra Flores is doubling down on border security ahead of the November midterm elections.
In a post on social media, Flores wrote, “A country that cannot control its borders is not a country. We must secure our borders to protect our families. We must protect our families so they can also achieve the American Dream.”
Flores shocked the nation when she flipped Texas’s 34th Congressional District, a former Democrat stronghold, in a special election in June. After former Rep. Filemon Vela resigned in March, Flores received the endorsement of Gov. Greg Abbott and ran a strong campaign against Democrat candidate Dan Sanchez, according to Fox News.
After only a few months in office, Flores faces another challenge. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-Texas, who currently represents the state’s 15th Congressional District, is running against her due to the redrawn congressional map.
Because her district lies on the border between Texas and Mexico, Flores has made border security a top priority in her campaign.
In her latest message, she explained, “Some heroes wear capes. Others wear green. In South Texas, Border Patrol keeps us safe every day.”
Flores said Border Patrol agents in South Texas are experiencing a “heartbreaking” situation at the southern border. She described it as, “A humanitarian crisis created by politicians who silence Border Patrol, blame them, and take away their funding.”
Flores said the humanitarian crisis “has to stop,” emphasizing that if she is elected in November, she will continue to support border security and protect the people of South Texas.
“I will give border patrol the resources they need to secure our borders and protect our families,” Flores promised.
