Former Vice President Dick Cheney’s previous anti-Trump statements have ignited a firestorm of comments on social media recently, prompting supporters of the 45th president to joke that the criticisms are actually an “endorsement” that will inspire more people to vote for Trump.
Cheney, who has become infamous for his role in embroiling the U.S. in the war in the Middle East alongside former President George W. Bush, released a video statement last year that slammed President Trump.
Per Politico, he claimed that Trump was a “threat” to the republic and that in 2020, he tried to “steal the election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him.”
In 2022, Cheney attempted to boost the reelection campaign of his daughter, then-Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., slamming Trump in a video where he claimed Trump knew he had “lost his election, and he lost big.”
He continued, “I know it. He knows it, and deep down, I think most Republicans know.”
Perhaps unsurprisingly, conservative voters in Wyoming in November 2022 resoundingly rejected Cheney’s dogmatic anti-Trump comments and replaced Rep. Cheney in the House with Rep. Harriet Hageman, R-Wyo., who was strongly endorsed by President Trump.
Trump ally Kari Lake explained to conservative commentator Clay Travis that President Trump was indeed a “threat to the corrupt political machine that is Washington, D.C.,” and heralding him as the only man for president in 2024 who could save America in this “pivotal moment.”
She continued, “That’s why Dick Cheney, by the way, says he’s [Trump] a threat. He’s a threat to Dick Cheney’s way of life. He’s a threat to Dick Cheney’s political machine, which is a warmongering machine.”
Lake reminded listeners that just three years ago , President Trump signed the Abraham Accords, which brokered a historic peace deal in the Middle East. Unlike the Bush-Cheney administration, which brought decades of bloody war in places like Iraq and Afghanistan, President Trump’s administration moved the entire world closer to global peace.
