Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is in critical condition at a hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida, according to his spokesman.
Giuliani, 81, was admitted to the emergency room over the weekend and is being treated in the intensive care unit. He was placed on a ventilator on Sunday after experiencing severe respiratory distress, according to a source close to him. His condition was described as stable.
His spokesman, Ted Goodman, said in a statement that Giuliani “remains in critical but stable condition.”
“Mayor Giuliani is a fighter who has faced every challenge in his life with unwavering strength, and he’s fighting with that same level of strength as we speak. We do ask that you join us in prayer for America’s Mayor Rudy Giuliani,” the statement said.
President Trump also released a statement following the news concerning the former mayor.
“Our fabulous Rudy Giuliani, a True Warrior, and the Best Mayor in the History of New York City, BY FAR, has been hospitalized, and is in critical condition. What a tragedy that he was treated so badly by the Radical Left Lunatics, Democrats ALL — AND HE WAS RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING! They cheated on the Elections, fabricated hundreds of stories, did anything possible to destroy our Nation, and now, look at Rudy. So sad!” the president posted to Truth Social Sunday evening.
Giuliani’s health issues are believed to be linked to chronic lung conditions, possibly stemming from exposure during the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. As mayor at the time, he spent significant time at ground zero, where first responders and others were exposed to toxic dust and debris.
Long-term health effects from that exposure have been widely documented, with many firefighters, police officers and recovery workers later developing respiratory illnesses, cancers and other chronic conditions.
Giuliani served as mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2001 and became a national figure for his leadership during the Sept. 11 attacks. In recent years, he remained active in politics and was a close ally of Donald Trump, serving as one of his personal attorneys.
Following the 2020 election, Giuliani was a central figure in efforts to challenge the results and faced multiple legal and professional challenges tied to that work.
