Two-time Academy Award winner Sean Penn took a hit at American culture, saying men have become “wildly feminized” and are suffering from “cowardly genes.”
During an interview with U.K.’s “i News,” Penn shared his controversial view regarding masculinity in American culture. He told the outlet “men in American culture have become wildly feminized.”
“I don’t think that being a brute or having insensitivity or disrespect for women is anything to do with masculinity, or ever did,” the 61-year-old actor continued. “But I don’t think that [in order] to be fair to women, we should become them.”
He was asked to clarify his initial comments in a following interview with The Independent, where he reiterated “I think that men have, in my view, become quite feminized.”
“I have these very strong women in my life who do not take masculinity as a sign of oppression toward them. There are a lot of, I think, cowardly genes that lead to people surrendering their jeans and putting on a skirt,” Penn said, taking a hit at celebrities like Harry Styles, who have publicly worn female clothing.
English actress Thandiwe Newton slammed Penn for his comments, calling him a “fool” and “tragic” on Twitter.
Nonetheless, this isn’t the first time the “Carlito’s Way” actor has expressed his views regarding modern culture in America.
When appearing on the “Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend” podcast, Penn ripped cancel culture, calling it “ludicrous.”
“When we’re destroying careers like that, what are we really achieving?” Penn said, referring to Alexi McCammond, who was axed as editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue over tweets she posted as a teenager.
“Or you look at politicians, I give a big nod to anyone that’s willing to enter the public arena who is doing so because they give a damn,” Penn added.
