Clashes broke out in Minneapolis late Wednesday and into early Thursday after a second shooting involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in the city, as local and state officials renewed calls for the agency to leave.
An ICE agent shot an alleged illegal immigrant in the leg on Wednesday during an attempted arrest, according to the Department of Homeland Security. DHS said the agent fired because he was “fearing for his life and safety” after the suspect resisted arrest and “violently assaulted the officer.”
The suspect was reported to be in stable condition and remains in custody. The ICE agent was hospitalized, according to officials.
The incident followed a fatal shooting last week in which an ICE agent shot Renee Nicole Good, a U.S. citizen, during a traffic encounter in Minneapolis. Authorities said the agent fired into the vehicle before it crashed into a parked car. The shooting sparked days of protests and national attention.
Local Democrats and some residents have condemned the earlier shooting as unjustified and called for the agent involved to be prosecuted. The Trump administration and Republican lawmakers have defended the actions of ICE agents, saying the use of force was lawful.
Protests continued Wednesday night after the latest shooting, with demonstrators using whistles and horns while officers deployed tear gas, pepper spray and pepper balls to disperse the crowd. At least 100 people gathered near the scene, with some throwing objects and fireworks at officers, police said, according to Fox News.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz called for calm and peaceful demonstrations while criticizing President Donald Trump.
“I know you’re angry. I’m angry. What Donald Trump wants is violence in the streets. But Minnesota will remain an island of decency, of justice, of community, and of peace. Don’t give him what he wants,” Walz wrote on X.
The events occurred as a federal judge refused to block ICE operations in Minnesota.
“A highly respected judge declined to block I.C.E. operations in the very politically corrupt State of Minnesota. I.C.E. will therefore be allowed to continue its highly successful operation of removing some of the most violent and vicious criminals anywhere in the World, many of them murderers, from the State. The great patriots of Law Enforcement will continue to make our Country safe. RECORD LOW CRIME NUMBERS!!!” President Trump posted to Truth Social.
