The Senate unanimously confirmed Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio as secretary of state on Monday.

The final vote came after the Senate Foreign Relations Committee had earlier voted to recommend him for the role, making him the first nominee by President Donald Trump to be confirmed.

“Leading the U.S. Department of State is a tremendous responsibility, and I am honored by the trust President Trump has placed in me,” Rubio said in November.

“As Secretary of State, I will work every day to carry out his foreign policy agenda. Under the leadership of President Trump, we will deliver peace through strength and always put the interests of Americans and America above all else. I look forward to earning the support of my colleagues in the U.S. Senate so the President has his national security and foreign policy team in place when he takes office on January 20,” he added.

All 99 senators supported the nomination, including Rubio himself. The one vacancy was former Ohio Republican Sen. JD Vance, who stepped down to be sworn in as vice president.

Rubio becomes the first Hispanic American to serve as secretary of state, bringing with him experience as the top GOP leader on the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis announced last week that the state’s Attorney General Ashley Moody would fill Rubio’s Senate seat. Trump’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump was previously speculated as an option, but later withdrew her name from consideration.

As RSBN previously reported, Moody was elected Florida’s highest legal officer in 2018, succeeding Pam Bondi, who was recently nominated by Trump to serve as U.S. attorney general. She later won reelection in 2018 by a large margin.

As state attorney general, Moody has served as a strong ally of Trump. In 2020, she supported the president’s Texas v. Pennsylvania lawsuit that challenged the 2020 election results, The Hill reported. She also charged the reported would-be assassin Ryan Wesley Routh, who was accused of attempting to assassinate Trump in September on one of his Florida golf courses.
