Steve Bannon, War Room podcast host and former White House chief strategist during the first Trump administration, called for a third Trump presidency in 2028 while speaking at the New York Young Republican Club’s annual gala.
While Bannon was likely only joking, given that the 22nd Amendment to the United States Constitution states that a person can only be elected twice, the suggestion was well-received by attendees.
Bannon prefaced the remark with excitement for the future. “Donald John Trump is going to raise his hand on a King James Bible and take the oath of office. His third victory. His third victory and his second term!”
He told the crowd. “And the viceroy Mike Davis tells me since it doesn’t actually say consecutive, that I don’t know maybe we do it again in ‘28 are you guys down for that? Trump ’28! Come on, man!”
Liberal media outlets instantly went into a tailspin and took Bannon’s comment seriously.
Mike Davis, an attorney and founder of the Article III Project, responded to the panic in a Monday post on X, formerly Twitter. Davis shared the clip and wrote, “Dear Reporters: Here is my response to the many of you reaching out to me for comment: ‘Steven Bannon is obviously trolling. Only Obama gets a third term, with his puppet Biden.’”
Bannon also discussed debt in the United States, which he said would be $40 trillion by 2026, calling the total “almost baked in,” regardless of efforts by President Trump and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Bannon told the crowd, “President Trump’s gotta get, and he will, a grip on the out-of-control debt, the out-of-control spending. Elon Musk will be a part of this, right?”
He argued that taxes would need to be raised on the wealthy to make up the gap for Trump’s populist plan of doing away with taxes on tips, taxes on Social Security for the elderly, and taxes on overtime.
Bannon encouraged attendees to have Trump’s back because “The fights in Washington have already started,” noting that wasteful spending has continued through reconciliation and other bills.
He also said that Trump’s nominees must be approved expeditiously.
“President Trump took a bullet to the head, and four months later won in a landslide. He gets to have the team he wants!” Bannon stated.
