Former White House advisor and “War Room” host Steve Bannon has filed for a new trial, per the Conservative Brief.

Bannon was convicted of contempt charges in July for defying a congressional subpoena that would have required him to appear before the Jan. 6 Committee and provide testimony regarding the “insurrection” that took place at the U.S. Capitol in 2021.

The Conservative Brief reported that Bannon filed a new motion for a trial based on the premise that the judge in his case prevented Bannon from being able to call upon members of Congress as potential witnesses.

During the trial, Bannon’s lawyers announced that he would not be calling witnesses due to the restrictions and that they would further not be introducing any new evidence in the case.

The Washington Times revealed that one of Bannon’s lawyers, David Schoen, stated in the newly-filed motion that, “Mr. Bannon was barred from putting on any evidence or argument that he never believed he was doing anything unlawful; and indeed, understood and believed that he responded to the subpoena in the only way the law permitted, once executive privilege was invoked.”

Bannon served as the chief strategist in the White House during Trump’s administration and is now the host of an online show called “War Room.” Recently, Bannon made an appearance at CPAC in Dallas, Texas, and called for an end to the U.S. Federal Reserve. He told CPAC attendees, “We don’t need to audit the Fed, we need to end the Federal Reserve.”

Bannon’s request for a retrial was filed on Friday, per The Washington Times, with Bannon facing up to two years in prison at his sentencing, which is scheduled for Oct. 21.
