President Donald Trump’s former chief strategist Steve Bannon issued subpoenas to Democrat leaders and all members of the Jan. 6 committee ahead of his trial in July, maintaining that the charges issued against him are politically motivated.
According to the Washington Examiner, Bannon’s legal team handed subpoenas to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, House general counsel Douglas Letter, as well as three staff committee members.
Bannon’s attorney, David Schoen, told the outlet that “the subpoenas seek the production of documents by July 14 and the witnesses’ trial testimony for Mr. Bannon’s trial beginning July 18th.”
Last year, Bannon became the first former White House adviser to be charged after refusing to comply with a subpoena issued by the committee over the investigation into the events of Jan. 6.
Following his criminal charges, Bannon pleaded not guilty and vowed to fight the legal attacks by House Democrats and the “illegitimate Biden regime,” warning that Biden, Pelosi, and Attorney General Merrick Garland would face a “misdemeanor from hell.”
Per the Washington Times, Bannon’s legal team will attempt to prove that the committee’s actions against him are politically motivated, with members serving on the committee having a conflict of interest.
Another former Trump adviser, Peter Navarro, was recently arrested by the FBI for also defying subpoenas from who Trump calls the “political thugs” of the Jan. 6 committee. Navarro will represent himself in the trial.
