The Texas GOP promised on Thursday to work toward securing the southern border once Republicans officially take the House majority in January 2023. According to a report from the Washington Examiner, Texas Republicans gathered outside the U.S. Capitol this week to unveil a plan designed to stop the flood of illegal crossings at the border.
Their plan comes just after Gov. Greg Abbott, R-Texas, moved to invoke the Invasion Clauses from the U.S. and Texas Constitutions in November in light of the escalating crisis at the southern border, per RSBN.
Via Fox News, the Texas Republicans’ border policy approach will take action on reforming security measures and reinstate a “Remain-in-Mexico” type policy that would deny entry onto U.S. soil to all illegal immigrants if they were unable to be detained.
The Washington Examiner reported that Rep. Jodey Arrington, R-Texas, stated on Thursday, “With this new Republican majority in the House, our Texas delegation is committed to using every tool and authority at our disposal to hold President Biden, Secretary Mayorkas, and this entire administration responsible for their dereliction of duty, to support our state leaders and their efforts to defend Texas in the face of this clear and imminent danger, and to put policies and this framework in place that will protect our citizens and secure our sovereign border.”
President Donald Trump recently stated that the U.S. would be “paying a very big price, perhaps the biggest price of all, because of what is being allowed to happen at our Southern Border, which just two years ago was the most secure, by far, in history.”
If House Republicans utilize their position as the majority party in 2023, the Texas GOP is poised to spearhead solutions to the problems at the southern border, which has introduced rising crime and drug trafficking into the U.S. In fact, President Trump has previously estimated that around 10 million people have entered the U.S. illegally, per RSBN.
