Culture clashes and concerns regarding Sharia law being implemented in the United States have led Republican leaders in Texas to expand the Sharia-Free America Caucus. Created in December, it now has 42 members who vocally oppose sharia law in the name of protecting Americans’ constitutional rights.
On Monday, Rep. Keith Self, R-Tex., celebrated the addition of new members in a post on X, stating, “America’s culture, history, and rugged spirit make us exceptional. Sharia stands opposed to our Constitution and way of life. DEFEND THE WEST.”
Self and Rep. Chip Roy, R-Tex., created the Sharia-Free America Caucus in response to the Muslim population boom in Texas. In a press release last month, the caucus had reached 24 members, all of whom explained the need to protect Americans from Sharia law.
According to a 2019 Sharia Law & Human Rights meeting sponsored by the European Center for Law & Justice and Femmes for Freedom, held between leaders in the United Kingdom, Sweden, and the Netherlands, all areas that have taken in Syrian refugees and experienced serious culture clashes between Muslim residents and native peoples, Sharia law attacks individual rights.
The meeting highlighted that homosexuality, conversion from Islam, and defaming Islam are all punishable by death under Sharia law. Women are allowed to be beaten and raped by their husbands if he deems it necessary under Sharia law. Men are allowed to divorce their wives and have up to four wives, but women are not allowed to divorce their husbands or have more than one husband under Sharia law. Young girls are forced to have their genitals mutilated under sharia law to “promote chastity.” And honor killings allow men to kill their own children if they “dishonor” the family under sharia law.
Sharia courts have reportedly been established in Texas. Just last November, Governor Gregg Abbot, R, directed the Texas Attorney General, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the North Texas District Attorneys and Sheriffs to investigate unlawful sharia courts which “may be masquerading as legal ‘courts’ staffed with ‘judges’ issuing orders that purportedly carry the authority to bind individuals to Islamic codes, thereby preempting state and federal laws.”
Islam is expanding in the West. The US Religion Census found in 2020 that the number of Muslims in the country nearly doubled, going from 2.6 million in 2016 up to 4.5 million in 2020.

Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., joined the Shari-Free America Caucus, and explained his position earlier this month in a speech shared on X. “When we examine sharia as a political and legal system, it is clearly incompatible with core American principles, including individual liberty, equal protection under the law, freedom of speech, and the separation of powers,” he said. “Our constitution is the supreme law of the land.”

“No legal framework, foreign or domestic, can be permitted to undermine it,” he added, defending the Sharia-Free America Caucus from critics who claim it is Islamophobic. “Safeguarding our legal system is not intolerance. It is responsibility.”
He then declared, “The Sharia-Free American Caucus exists to ensure that American law remains American, rooted in our constitution, enforced equally, and protected from ideological systems that reject those foundations. And make no mistake, sharia rejects America’s foundational roots.”
