President Donald Trump shared a statement on Thursday from an Arizona GOP leader following the state’s ruling on election integrity.
The ruling stated that registered voters who do not provide proof of citizenship will be rejected.
“Today, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of election integrity! Voters in Arizona who register with the state and do not provide proof of citizenship will be rejected,” said Warren Peterson, Arizona Senate President.
“This is a victory for election integrity in Arizona. Only U.S. citizens should be allowed to vote in our elections. It sounds like common sense, but the radical left elected officials in our state continue to reject this notion, disrespecting the voices of our lawful Arizona voters. We are grateful the court is upholding this provision in our law, and it’s time for Congress to take action to ensure only lawful U.S. citizens are voting in federal races,” he added.
The ruling comes just after America First Legal (AFL) sent letters to all 15 Arizona County Recorders to demand action to remove non-citizens from voter rolls. The letters were sent on behalf of AFL’s clients, the Arizona Free Enterprise Club and Strong Communities Foundation of Arizona.
“The integrity of our elections now potentially hinges upon millions of illegal aliens simply checking a box on a piece of paper that claims they are U.S. citizens, and then whatever ballot they would receive for use is available to be cast by leftist activists to influence the outcome of elections. This is lunacy,” AFL Executive Director Gene Hamilton said.
“Every state in the nation must ensure only citizens vote in elections, and they have the tools to do so. We expect swift and decisive legal action for our clients,” he added.
President Joe Biden won the popular vote in Arizona by about 12,000 votes in 2020. The closely contested battle included controversies over counting in Maricopa County, the state’s most populous county.
The legal battle also seeks to counter concerns of non-citizen voting that have increased under the Biden administration. While non-citizens are not allowed to vote in federal elections, several cities have pushed legislation to allow non-citizens to vote in municipal elections.
